How units are converted

For most categories (length, weight, volume and speed), each unit has a conversion factor to a base unit. The value is first converted to the base unit and then to the target unit:

result = (value × source unit factor) ÷ target unit factor

Temperature is different because the scales don't start from zero at the same point, so it's first converted to degrees Celsius and then to the target scale. For example, from Fahrenheit to Celsius:

°C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9

Worked example

To convert 5 kilometers to miles: 5 km equals 5 × 1000 = 5000 meters (base unit), and 5000 ÷ 1609.344 ≈ 3.107 miles. To convert 100 °F to Celsius: (100 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 ≈ 37.8 °C.

Frequently asked questions

What units can I convert with this calculator?
You can convert units of length (mm, cm, m, km, inches, feet, miles), weight (g, kg, pounds, ounces), temperature (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin), volume (ml, liters, gallons, fluid ounces) and speed (km/h, mph, m/s).
Why is temperature calculated differently?
Because temperature scales don't share the same zero point, so a simple multiplication factor isn't enough: a specific conversion formula must be applied for each pair of scales.
How precise are the results?
The calculator shows up to 6 decimal places so results are useful both for everyday conversions and more technical calculations.
Can I convert between units of different categories?
No, conversion is only valid within the same category (for example, length to length). To change category, select another one from the dropdown above.
