How Navy method body fat is calculated
The Navy method uses logarithmic formulas based on neck, waist and (for women) hip circumference, together with height.
Men: body fat% = 495 / (1.0324 − 0.19077×log10(waist−neck) + 0.15456×log10(height)) − 450
Worked example
A man 180 cm tall with a 38 cm neck and 85 cm waist has about 16.1% body fat ('fitness' category).
Frequently asked questions
- What is the Navy method?
- It's a body fat estimation method developed by the US Navy that uses tape-measure circumferences instead of a bioimpedance scale or calipers.
- How accurate is this method?
- It has a margin of error of about ±3-4% compared to clinical methods like DEXA, but it's fast, free and needs no special equipment.
- How do I measure my neck and waist correctly?
- Measure the neck just below the larynx and the waist at navel level, with the tape snug but not tight.
- Why do women need the hip measurement?
- The female formula includes hip circumference because fat distribution differs between men and women.
