How a discount is calculated
The amount you save when applying a discount is calculated by multiplying the original price by the discount percentage expressed as a decimal:
savings = (original price × discount) ÷ 100
The final price is the original price minus the amount saved:
final price = original price − savings
Worked example
If a jacket costs $100 and has a 20% discount, the savings are (100 × 20) ÷ 100 = $20, so the final price you pay is 100 − 20 = $80.

- How do I calculate the discounted price?
- Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the savings. Then subtract that amount from the original price to get the final price.
- How do I calculate the discount percentage applied?
- Divide the savings (original price minus final price) by the original price and multiply by 100.
- Can several discounts be applied one after another?
- Yes, but successive discounts don't simply add up: each discount is applied to the price resulting from the previous one, so the total savings are usually smaller than the sum of the percentages.
- Does the result include taxes?
- No, the calculator only works with the price you enter. If that price doesn't include tax, you'll need to add it separately to the final price.
