How work hours are calculated
The calculator finds the difference between clock-out and clock-in time, then subtracts the break. If clock-out is earlier than clock-in, the shift is assumed to cross midnight.
Hours worked = (clock-out − clock-in) − break
Worked example
Clock in at 09:00, clock out at 17:30, with a 30-minute break: 8 hours worked.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this calculator handle payroll?
- No. It only totals hours worked in a shift; it doesn't calculate wages, overtime pay or deductions, which depend on each country's laws.
- Can I calculate a shift that crosses midnight?
- Yes. If clock-out time is earlier than clock-in time, the shift is assumed to end the next day.
- What if the break is longer than the shift?
- The result would be invalid, so the calculator shows a warning instead of an incorrect result.
- Can I use this for multiple shifts in one day?
- This version calculates one shift at a time; for multiple shifts, add up the results of each calculation.
