How the tip is calculated
The tip is calculated by applying the chosen percentage to the bill amount:
tip = bill × (percentage ÷ 100)
The total to pay is the sum of the bill and the tip, and if it's split between several people, that total is divided equally among the number of diners:
per person = (bill + tip) ÷ number of people
Worked example
For a $50 bill with a 10% tip split between 2 people: the tip is $5, the total is $55, and each person pays $27.50.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I calculate the tip on a bill?
- Multiply the bill amount by the desired tip percentage and divide by 100. For example, 10% of $50 is $5.
- How is the tip split between several people?
- The tip is added to the bill amount to get the total, and that total is divided equally among the number of people specified.
- What percentage is a typical tip?
- It depends on the country and the establishment, but many places typically leave between 5% and 15% of the bill when service isn't included, while US restaurants often expect 15-20%.
- Does the calculator also split the bill without a tip?
- The 'Per person' result always includes the tip; if you want to split only the bill, you can set the tip percentage to 0.
