How fuel consumption and cost are calculated

Liters needed are calculated from the vehicle's average consumption and the trip distance. Cost is found by multiplying liters by the fuel price.

Liters = (consumption L/100km ÷ 100) × distance (km)

Worked example

With a consumption of 6 L/100km, a 500 km trip and fuel at 1.60: you need 30 liters and the trip costs 48.

Frequently asked questions

What is L/100km?
It's the most common fuel consumption unit in Europe: how many liters the vehicle needs to travel 100 kilometers.
How do I convert L/100km to mpg?
Divide 235.214583 by the consumption in L/100km to get the equivalent in US miles per gallon.
Where do I find my car's consumption figure?
It's usually listed by the manufacturer in the vehicle specs, or you can calculate it yourself by dividing liters filled by kilometers driven and multiplying by 100.
Does this calculator include tolls or other costs?
No. It only calculates fuel cost; for the total trip cost you should add tolls, parking or other expenses separately.
