How running pace is calculated

Pace is the time it takes to cover 1 km (or 1 mile). It's calculated by dividing total time by distance.

Pace (min/km) = total time (min) ÷ distance (km)

Worked example

10 km in 50 minutes = a pace of 5:00 min/km and an average speed of 12 km/h.

Frequently asked questions

What is running pace?
It's the time it takes to cover one unit of distance (1 km or 1 mile), widely used in running to plan training and races.
How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply the min/km pace by 1.609344 (the number of kilometers in a mile).
Why is knowing my pace useful?
It helps you plan a race finish-time goal, train within intensity zones, and track your progress over time.
Are speed and pace the same thing?
They're inverse: speed measures distance per unit of time (km/h) and pace measures time per unit of distance (min/km).
