How these statistics are calculated

The mean is the average of all values. The median is the middle value when data is sorted. The mode is the most frequently occurring value(s). The sample standard deviation measures how spread out the data is from the mean.

Mean = sum of values ÷ number of values

Worked example

For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9: mean = 5, median = 4.5, mode = 4, range = 7, standard deviation ≈ 2.14.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use the median instead of the mean?
The median is more robust to outliers; if your data has very high or very low values, the median usually better represents the 'center' of the data.
Can there be more than one mode?
Yes. If two or more values repeat the same maximum number of times, all of them are modes (multimodal distribution).
Why divide by n−1 in standard deviation?
n−1 (Bessel's correction) is used when the data is a sample, not the whole population, to give a less biased estimate of the true spread.
What format should I use to enter numbers?
You can separate them with commas, spaces, or both, e.g.: 2, 4, 6 8 10.
