How the weighted average is calculated
Unlike the arithmetic mean, the weighted average gives more importance to values with a higher weight. Each value is multiplied by its weight, the results are added, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights.
weighted average = Σ(value × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)
Worked example
A final exam is worth 60% and two midterms 20% each, with grades 8, 7 and 6: average = (8×20 + 7×20 + 6×60) ÷ 100 = 6.6.
Frequently asked questions
- How is it different from the arithmetic mean?
- The arithmetic mean gives equal weight to all values; the weighted average accounts for the relative importance of each value through its weight.
- Do the weights need to add up to 100?
- Not necessarily. The formula divides by the total sum of weights, so you can use any scale (percentages, credits, hours, etc.).
- Can I leave rows empty if I have fewer than four values?
- Yes, empty rows or rows with weight 0 are ignored in the calculation.
