How compressing PDF works
The tool removes unnecessary metadata (author, title, keywords) and rewrites the file using a more compact internal structure.
This is a 'structural' compression: it works best on text-heavy PDFs or documents generated by office editors. On scanned PDFs or files with many high-resolution images, savings may be small because images are not recompressed.
Worked example
A 2.4 MB PDF with extensive metadata and an unoptimized structure may drop to 2.1 MB after compression; the actual savings depend on each file's content.
Frequently asked questions
- How much smaller will my PDF get?
- It depends on the file. It works best on text documents; scanned PDFs with heavy images usually see smaller savings.
- Does image quality get worse?
- No, images are not recompressed or rescaled, only the file structure is optimized and metadata is removed.
- Are my files uploaded to a server?
- No, compression happens entirely in your browser.
